Over Labor Day weekend, I made a visit out to the National Harbor, MD for a girls date with my Aunt. We decided on an afternoon at the National Harbor, since it’s not a place we go a lot and for its convenient location right off 495. The great thing about the National Harbor, is while it seems far- its really only about a 20-30 minute drive from the immediate DC surrounding area, yet when you get there you feel like you are miles away in a beach town!
I went to the National Harbor back in July for a night out at Bobby McKey’s Dueling Piano Bar for one of my best friends birthdays and I must say we had a ball. While we only spent the evening there, I had forgotten its charm and wanted go back during the day, when I’d have more time. So, last Saturday my Aunt and I made it happen and had a gorgeous day by the water.
The National Harbor is filled with restaurants and bars for waterside dining, activities and sports, shops, hotels, and coming soon- the MGM Casino. There’s even a new(ish) Tanger Outlet mall right outside of the National Harbor! It also serves as a host to many different yearly events such as Wine and Beer Festivals, various marathons and runs, and the famous holiday ICE! display at the Gaylord National Hotel. Not to mention- the art scene is vibrant at the Harbor with the Art Whino Gallery and The Awakening sculpture by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. thats housed at the water side beach park.
My Aunt and I spent our time strolling the marina, shopping at the local Farmer’s Market, Betty, Alex and Ani, South Moon Under, and Peeps; gawking at all the cool artwork at Art Whino; and most importantly- having lunch with waterside views at Rosa Mexicana, since we love Mexican food! Although we didn’t do it all, we still had a great time and I really enjoyed all the waterside charm the National Harbor brought to our afternoon. Next time you are looking for something different to do, head to the National Harbor and spend the day in this beach-like town!
