One thing I learned this weekend- if you haven't been to The United States National Arboretum- you need to go! I was drawn to the National Arboretum when I saw some pictures of the Capitol Columns that looked very impressive. I decided to check it out and they are even more impressive in person! The National Arboretum is part of the Department of Agriculture and it serves as an agricultural and botanical research center. The arboretum also houses the original columns of the old East Portico of the United States Capitol dating back to 1828! The columns were removed from the Capitol in 1958 due to an expansion and were brought to the arboretum as a historic site. The grounds surrounding the columns are absolutely gorgeous, and there are also a number of other gardens and botanic collections. I honestly couldn't get over the beauty of the arboretum and I find it amazing that we have this in DC- what a gem! The arboretum is a beautiful backdrop for walking/running the grounds, pictures, picnics, and botanical learning. Admission is free and the arboretum is open daily from 8am-5pm. Definitely add this to your list of things to do in DC if you haven't been- you will not be disappointed!
